Bill’s Weekly Reflection: Slice
Next Friday we will hold our 8th annual Slice of Pi fundraising event for DSST Public Schools. This event is truly a celebration of our students, teachers and mission. Unlike many other non-profit fundraisers, we have always chosen to hold the event in our schools and not a big hotel ballroom. Why?
A couple of reasons: First, the event has always been about showcasing the great work of our teachers and students. The student demonstrations are the heart of the event. Our guests every year comment most about the extraordinary experience of interacting with our students, teachers and the creative work done in our classrooms each day in the demonstrations. A big shout out to teachers like George Gigiolio, Molly Lepore, and Bret Poppleton who have lead very successful demonstrations year after year at the Slice of Pi – and will be back again this year!
Second, holding the event at a school ensures that the greatest percentage of dollars raised goes to supporting DSST and not paying for the event. We expect that expenses of the event this year to be approximately 5% of total revenue – an extraordinary number when you consider that most large fundraising events cost 50% of total dollars raised. This fact means that our donors are truly investing in our students, not in the cost of running the event.
Next Friday night will be a very special night for DSST Public Schools. We have the occasion of honoring one of our most generous supporters, Dr. John Malone. John’s extraordinary commitment to our mission, our students and our growth has enabled DSST to serve thousands more students in Denver. It is a true privilege to be able to count John as a friend and supporter of DSST Public Schools.
I hope that you all will join us for this special night. It promises to be evening that we will not forget for a long time.
