Cycling at DSST: Green Valley Ranch HS Cycling

In the month of April a number of milestones occurred with our cycling program at DSST, most important of which was our first mountain bike ride of the season.  We were extremely fortunate to have the support of Trips for Kids and this ride, in addition to upcoming mountain bike rides, would not have be possible without their help and, in particular, the guidance and leadership of Andy Brannon.  For all ten students this was their first time EVER mountain biking and it was awesome to see how far each student progressed throughout the day both with skills and confidence

Bill’s Weekly Reflection:  Meeting President Obama

This past week, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet President Obama before his speech at CU Boulder.  No, I did not spill yogurt on him.  And no, I did not make a funny face when I took a picture with him so I could go viral on the internet.  But, it was a once-in-a-life-time experience and I am grateful to have had the opportunity.  I briefly shared with him the good work our DSST team is doing and reminded him that DSST: Stapleton High School was a finalist in his first Commencement Challenge.  He remembered that.

Service Learning Spring Break and Homes for Hope

The Service Learning Spring Break trip, organized by Social Justice teacher, Bret Poppleton, has become a DSST: Stapleton High School tradition.  Each year, students join Poppleton and a few other teachers to spend their seven days of vacation volunteering. This year, 35 students and 8 adults spent their week building homes in Costa Rica for impoverished families with an organization called Homes of Hope.
